Merry Christmas vs. Happy Holidays

Every year the political correctness surrounding Christmas seems to get worse. This year is no different. Working retail for the last few years, I have been encouraged by managers and owners alike that prefer us to say "Happy Holidays" as to offend fewer customers.

Well, what about offending your employees? I am offend every single time someone tells me to not say Merry Christmas. I do not tell other people how they should practice their religion, so why should I water down my beliefs for someone else? How many years have we been taught in school about the religious oppression that took place in this country during the founding years? The Puritans came over from Europe to avoid religious persecution and inflicted the same treatment they received, on Catholics, Jewish, and every other religion that they did not agree with when they came over. Now the religion of Political Correctness has taken over and essentially is doing exactly the same thing.

Merry Christmas is my way of expressing my belief in the holiday and all that it stands for during a short time of the year. I may not go to church, I may have never been baptized, I may not practice any one religion, but do not tell me what to believe or to supress who I am as a person because last time I checked the constitution I had the right to practice my chosen religion as I saw fit. So do NOT tell me to be politically correct for a bunch of people that aren't even offended by my saying Merry Christmas. The people offended are the ones that are looking for an excuse on a daily basis to be offended by something simply so that they can become the center of attention. In fact, the people I offend more are the people who I do say "Happy Holidays" to by accident. It is amazing the reaction I get on a daily basis right now when a customer says "Happy Holidays" to me and I, in return say Merry Christmas. They get a big grin on their face and return with an enthusiastic "Merry Christmas". So, whom may I ask are we offending more at this point? You tell me...
