Picking up a new hobby!

So, I finally did something I have been wanting to do for a long while, I started an herb garden. Lowe's had a sale on these little kits and I figured better to start small and grow as my experiences grow. I decided on cilantro and sweet basil as I usually buy those herbs frequently at the grocery store and I can save $$ by growing my own. I also chose to grow steakhouse and cherry tomatoes. The tomatoes I'm a little nervous about because they probably need more sun than my balcony gets, but we shall see. Our balcony is screened in and faces north, but it is a very bright balcony as we are up on the third floor. We also have a nice tree that provides good air circulation.

If things go well with these first plants, then I'm going to start growing a few more herbs I use regularly before expanding into flowers next spring. It looks like Brad and I are going to be here for a while and I want to be able to enjoy our balcony and knowing I helped these plants grow. I have always wanted a hobby that helps me relax and I'm hoping that this will do the trick. Plus, it will help me landscape our home when we finally buy a house. I want to have my own vegetable garden eventually. I like the idea of growing my own food and playing in the dirt. I am very excited and hope that the cat does not kill everything once it starts growing out on the balcony.

I'm not sure what I want to do beyond herbs and veggies, but I know that I would love to try roses at some point, along with lavender and lilacs. Although, I think lilacs do not grow well down here in Florida. I think I will have to research it. If anyone knows of any good container gardening books, let me know!

Oh, Brad and I finally got a camera so I will take pictures of the progress that my little garden makes!

Until next time,
Erica

P.S. RIP Gary Coleman
