My little garden grows!

Well, I had hoped that I would be much more up to date with documenting my first foreay into gardening. However, pleasent visits from long missed family and friends have somewhat detered my blogging abilities slightly.

I have expanded my garden from simply tomato plants, cilantro and basil to now include rosemary, chives, lemon basil, and oregano is being planted tomorrow. I have transplanted the pods of tomatoes into large buckets, the basil, and cilantro have also been transplanted. First thing I learned, carrying bags of soil up three flights of stairs is not pleasant at all! Second thing that I have learned, rosemary from seeds is a pain to germinate thus far. Third, cilantro does not like to be transplanted. I have so much to learn!

Before moving the other herbs to bigger planters, I will be reading up more thoroughly on them and what to expect. In the meantime, I often find myself stopping in Lowes to look at stuff I might need as I get further along. I am excited about expanding, but I have to remember that my porch is only so big! I want to bring these plants up north with us if we move so I have to be conscious of what could happen to them if I expand to far. I am thinking about growing hot peppers so that I will have all the making for my favorite: homemade salsa.

When I first began, with yet another trip to Lowes, I ran into a lady that had what she called a 'spaghetti' pot of herbs and tomatoes that she used to grow the fixings for her own homemade tomato sauce. I would absolutely LOVE to do this, I much prefer to make things from scratch as I can control the health factor a lot more. I am by no means a super-organic person, but I enjoy the process of making things from scratch. I think that I am also going to make a chicken soup pot as well for the herbs I use in my homemade chicken soup.

I want to start picking up some gardening books, but I just haven't found any that really speak to me yet. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know! I love having a hobby of my own now. It gives me something to look forward to on my days off and I want to learn more. In my dream of dreams for my little garden, I would love to expand to a full herb and vegetable garden if we end up moving to Ohio and buying a house. If it is down here that I fulfill my little dream, then that will be just fine as well. Another dream is learning how to grow some beautiful flowers. When I have a house, I want to be able to make it look beautiful inside and out. It is amazing how as we get older how our dreams change.

I also have neglected to photograph my new garden's progress as I feel like I keep missing it, despite a new camera. Is this what it's going to be like having kids? Missing all those little growth spurts? Only with more attachment? Well, that is a few years down the road yet.

In the meantime, here are some pictures from our family/friend visit for the 4th of July.
