Good Reading
I found a book randomly at Kroger the other night with my mom. It was on sale, it was thick, and it was about witches. I've been in a witches kinda mood lately. I wanted a good story about witches though, not corny. I found it in this book along with vampires and daemons. I was very pleasantly surprised about how well written it was and equally entertaining. I really liked it because the damn vampires did not freakin' sparkle, they weren't lusty hornballs, they were intellegent creatures that had valid and useful information to the plot.
The author of the book write primarily non-fiction science books as well as history books. This appealed to me even though I was already half way through the book. It showed me this woman was using information that was factual in a fictional book. To me, a book that has solid elements of truth as part of the story despite being fiction, makes it so much more enjoyable. I spent the entire week reading it whenever I could because it didn't start out slow. It grabbed you from the first word and lord has it been a long time since a book grabbed me that quick.
The downside is, I was about 3/4's of the way through it when I read on the cover (that I usually skim) that this is in fact part of a triology. And it is book one. Book 2 comes out 2012.... damn it! I hate waiting for book series books to come out! Oh well. It will be worth the wait I think. I just hope that she keeps it more towards the realistic style writing with intellegence and solid storytelling.
I cannot wait to read book two! Also, the book is A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness.
